In the Past - Red Baron

December 31, 2004

In The Past  -  The Red Baron - Manfred Freiherr Von Richthofen

Manfred Freiherr Von Richthofen was born on May 2, 1892 in Breslau, Germany (Wroclaw Poland). He died on April 21, 1918, at the age of 25, shot down in battle over Vaux sur Somme, France by Australian gunners, but the fatal bullet may have also come from the guns of Canadian flier Arthur "Roy" Brown. Manfred is also known as the Red Baron and one of the most feared WWI Aces.

On another note, while researching the Red Baron I was shocked to learn that despite popular belief and pop culture Snoopy never did battle the Red Baron. Sadly the song by the Royal Guardsmen documenting Snoopy's exploits was a work of fiction (sorry, bad humor on my part but I could not resist)

Review

I would like to start by saying I am now a convert. I ordered the Baron for my friend Chris under the understanding that I would review it before I sent it to him. Not being familiar with the In The Past figures I really did not have great expectations for the Barron and I thought it would be just another run of the mill figure, I could have not been more wrong.

This figure is fantastic the attention to detail and quality is right on the mark. the experience starts with the box. the Barron  comes with a nicely decorated protective sleeve that once removed revels the figure in a window box the can be used for display. the back of the window box has a nice picture and short bio of the Baron.

The head sculpt on this figure is very good there were no defects or blemishes. The only complaint here is that the paint was a little washed and lacked highlights giving the Baron a pasty look under les than perfect ligting..

The body is excellent it is very articulate and solid, and is similar to the ones offered by Dragon and bbi. The figure comes with the bendy type hands.

The costume is where this figure excels. The Baron comes with a leather  jacket that is fully lined the includes a fur collar. It should be noted that all of the the pockets are fully functional.

His uniform is outstanding the detaining on the piping is incredible. The stitching and attention to detail was impressive. After close inspection I found zero defects in the costume. Finally the Baron comes with a set of nice rubber Jack boots. .

.

The Baron does not come with a lot of accessories but the ones he has are very nicely done. He comes with some nicely done medals, white scarf, Leather flight hat and goggles.

  Summary:

The Red Baron is nicely done and is a definite recommend, in fact I'm a little sorry I promised this figure to my friend Chris. I will most likely be contacting Tommy's Toys to order a Baron for my collection.
