GearBox WWI Fighter Pilot

December 15, 2004

Gearbox - U.S. Army Air Forces Fighter Pilot - XIX Tactical Air Command Europe 1944

This figure is the second figure from Gearbox that I have reviewed, the last figure reviewed was the German U-Boat Engineering Officer and that figure did so bad in the review I thought I would give Gearbox a second chance. This figure was designed by Cotswold and built by Gearbox but like the U-Boat Engineer something must have gone  wrong at the factory,

Review

The art work on the box is good very crisp and clean. On the front there is a depiction of a pilot climbing into his airplane. When you open up the box you get your first view of the figure and the inside jacket has a brief blurb about the P-47and the pilots that flew them. The back of the box shows the figure and list the contents of the box. One note the numbered box is listed as an accessory.

The head sculpt on this figure really did nothing for me it lacked charter and was of average design. However, it was painted well with no defects.

The body is similar to the classic GIjOE figures but it is lacking in the quality area. Like the last Gearbox figure we reviewed this one fell a part while putting on his jacket. The joints in the shoulders and forearms are weak and loose.

The figure has bendy type hands that have some nice detail to them but they have very flimsy wrist.

The body also had a serous case of paint flaking, Needless to say I am still trying to figure out why they painted the body when the molded color is flesh tone.

The costume consist of  coveralls and a leather jacket; both of which are of average design. The costume does have a really cool cloth 50 Mission Crush  cap with leather trim and a pair of Army service boots.

.

The figure comes with the following accessories; US M7 Shoulder Holster, Die-Cat .45 Caliber Pistol, B4 Life Vest, metal stand and a numbered box. I will admit the accessories are very nice.

  Summary:

The head sculpt is of average design and just acceptable, the body (base figure) is of poor quality and my test figure fell apart. The costume and accessories are nice and the only saving grace of this figure. A curios note the bottom flap of the box has the following on it "Gearbox Collectables - Quality isn't Something we Toy around with." am I missing something, my figure fell apart before I could display it. The design and concept for the figure is very nice but the quality and craftsmanship are lacking.
