James DeSimone's 1/6th scale PBR Boat

This months cover is on a PBR Boat (Patrol Boat River) that is being offered by James DeSimone.

James DeSimone is best known for his GIjOE publications, of which my favorite has to be "The New Official Identification Guide to GIjOE". This book is by far my most used reference guide for GIjOE and my  copy is certainly showing it's ware, being held together by a clip and tape. Aside from being a published author Mr. DeSimone also offers a number of 1/6th scale vehicles for sale on his website, this months cover we are featuring his 1/6th scale PBR Boat.

I would like to start by saying this boat is outstanding and a great value with a price tag of $100. When you receive your boat it comes in a huge box which would be very impressive under the Christmas tree; definitely add it to your list. I know what your saying to yourself "but does it float". You bet it floats, however, at 33inches long and 16 inches wide the bathtub can get a little crowded so you may want use it in the pool.

The beauty of the boat is you can take it right out of the box and use it in your diorama, take it to the beach, or customize it to your needs. The boat requires minimal assembly, all you need to do is install the canopy, Radar dish, guns, radio tower, and the wheel house. It took me just about twenty minutes from start to finish. The hull is roughly cut and may require some sanding and the filling in of small air holes in the plastic.

I do have a few comments to make, this boat is not museum quality replica of a PRB Boat. If you are looking for a more accurate display model may I suggest the the 1/32 Pibber by Tamiya. Also in our photos I did not install the rear machine gun or fully attach the radar dish because I plan to heavily customize this boat and I did not want to drill the required holes for the gun or nail the radar dish in place.

This winter I will be turning the PBR Boat into a fully Radio controlled version, and if all goes as planed I will be launching it next April. Look for the first installment of this project to appear in the February 2005 issue.
